Low carb Diet! Lose the weight and eat all the bacon you want!

You have seen all the hype, so how do you do a low carb diet?

First of all, you have to know what a carb is. It is short for carbohydrate and these carbs are in a lot of foods we eat. Carbohydrates are the sugars and starches found in fruits, grains, vegetables and milk products.

So how does consuming fewer carbs get people to lose so much weight? It's because our bodies run on carbohydrates for fuel. If we cut the carbs out then the body goes into its fat stores and burns the fat as fuel instead. In order for this to happen though, your body needs to go into ketosis. This is when you eliminate any carbohydrates from your food stores (in your body) so that your body can turn to those fat cells to burn for energy. Protein and fiber tend to be more filling so switching to a diet where you can eat until you are satisfied (on low carb foods), can ultimately accelerate the process by consuming less overall calories...even though you're not starving yourself!

Carbs are essentially sugars. If you look at a nutrition label you will notice they are usually the same number. When counting carbs the goal is to stay under 20 for at least 2 weeks, thus eliminating the cravings. When reading a label; always remember that fiber is your friend. You subtract any fiber from total carbs to get the count for the product. Fiber flushes you out so you want plenty of it in your diet. That is where the veggies come in. Rule of thumb is if you are reading a label, you probably shouldn't be eating it. You want to eat as clean as possible during this process as it is essentially a detox.

Now foods with a lot of carbs are usually things made with flour and/or sugar. Bread, pasta, muffins, candy soda, cereal and so on. All fruits, as well as some vegetables, are also on the high carb list since they have so much natural sugar.

So what CAN you eat? Protein and most veggies. So beef, pork, chicken, seafood, lamb, and eggs and cheese. Nuts and seeds can be added after the 2-week detox. The general rule for vegetables is that If they grow above ground they have the most fiber and least amount of sugars (asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach). Root vegetables (carrots, beets, potatoes) and other vegetables tend to have a lot of carbs so avoid those as well as peas and squash.

Add those healthy fats in there too. Avocados, extra virgin olive oil, peanut oil, grape seed oil, and coconut oil. You need fat for fuel. Just try to stay clear of too many saturated fats for a prolonged amount of time since they are not good for the heart. If you are really looking to accelerate belly fat loss then look into doing the South Beach diet which focuses on low carbs and low saturated fat. Make a healthy vinaigrette for marinades and salad dressings or reduce it down to make a glaze or drizzle. It's a great way to flavor your food and vinegar is also very good for you. Vinegar helps to flush fat.

Drink plenty of water to keep things moving and keep your energy up. Green tea (as well as other teas) are also other great options. Soda is forbidden so if you must have something of the like, then Diet sodas are ok. Also, try the carbonated fruit waters. Most are sweetened with alternative sweeteners that are ok for a ketosis diet. Stay away from fruit juice as it is also very high in sugar. Dairy contains a lot of carbs to opt for nut or soy milk and save the carbs for cheese!!!!

Alcohol can be consumed after the first 2 weeks but one also must be aware of the drink of choice. Most beer contains too many carbs although a lot of American ales are considerably lower as is their low carb counterparts. Red wine and spirits are good choices. Watch out for sugary mixers. Be aware that once on low carb that the amount of alcohol consumed has a greater effect so it may not take as much to reach intoxication. Do not drink and drive. Be aware, pace yourself and be responsible.

Going low carb is good for your body as it eliminates the nasty sugars we tend to consume too much of. It really is an easy diet to follow once you stock your kitchen up with the allowed foods and arm yourself with the above knowledge on how even YOU can do a low carb/ketosis diet!!!
